What Is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease, commonly known as gum disease, is a bacterial infection that affects the gums and supporting structures of the teeth. It develops when plaque and tartar build up, allowing bacteria to damage gum tissue and bone.

Without treatment, gum disease can progress through three stages:

1. Gingivitis (Early-Stage Gum Disease)

This is the first stage of gum disease and the only stage that can be reversed. At this point, plaque buildup along the gumline causes gums to become red, swollen, and prone to bleeding, especially when brushing or flossing.

  • Treatment Options: To treat gingivitis, professional cleanings are performed to remove plaque and bacteria before they cause further damage. A personalized oral hygiene plan is also recommended to prevent the condition from progressing into a more serious form of gum disease.

2. Periodontitis (Moderate Gum Disease)

If gingivitis is left untreated, it can advance to periodontitis, where plaque hardens into tartar (calculus). As this buildup spreads below the gumline, it causes the gums to pull away from the teeth, creating pockets that trap bacteria and lead to further infection.

  • Symptoms and Effects: At this stage, the gums begin to recede, exposing more of the teeth and making them appear longer. Gum pockets deepen beyond 3mm, and inflammation worsens, often leading to bleeding and increased tooth sensitivity.
  • Treatment Options: To manage periodontitis, a procedure called scaling and root planing (deep cleaning) is used to remove bacteria below the gumline. In some cases, antibacterial treatments are recommended to reduce infection and inflammation, helping to stabilize gum health.

3. Advanced Periodontitis (Severe Gum Disease)

When gum disease reaches advanced periodontitis, bacteria have destroyed gum tissue and bone, leading to severe complications that can affect both oral and overall health.

  • Symptoms and Effects: In this stage, teeth may become loose or shift due to the loss of supportive structures. Chronic bad breath (halitosis) often develops due to bacterial buildup. Additionally, deep gum recession exposes more of the teeth and may lead to discomfort or pain.
  • Treatment Options: Advanced periodontitis requires intensive treatment to control the infection and prevent further damage. Deep cleanings are performed to remove bacteria from the infected areas. In cases where bone loss is present, laser or surgical treatments may be recommended. If necessary, a referral to a periodontist may be made for further specialized care.

Deep Cleaning: Scaling and Root Planing

If gum disease has progressed beyond gingivitis, we recommend scaling and root planing to remove infection and restore gum health. This non-surgical treatment effectively eliminates hardened plaque, bacteria, and toxins from below the gumline, allowing the gums to heal and reattach to the teeth.
